Welcome to episode 244 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, Marty sits down with Darrell to talk about the launch of his brand new podcast, Profit and Principle — where Sunday's truth meets Monday's bottom line.

Key Takeaways:

  • Darrell launched Profit and Principle to fill a genuine gap — business podcasts that are built on secular frameworks, and Bible podcasts that don't speak the language of the marketplace, but almost nothing in the middle that does both seriously
  • The show is for experienced business people — entrepreneurs, managers, and executives — who are committed Christians and want to know what God actually said about the decisions they face every Monday morning
  • Every episode follows a consistent structure: the business reality, what Scripture says in full context, and one specific thing you can do this week
  • The first episode features a guest — Dr. Peter Stout, CEO of the Houston Forensic Science Center — who speaks to the Sunday-Monday gap from real leadership experience
  • 100 episodes are planned so far, covering the full landscape of business life: integrity, money, leadership, conflict, hiring, difficult decisions, and more
  • Each episode is 10–15 minutes and comes with a downloadable companion PDF for personal use or team discussion
  • The Profit and Principle website (profitandprinciple.com) will serve as the home base — with past episodes, companion PDFs, a weekly newsletter, and a weekly blog

Quotable:

"I'm not coming at this as a business consultant or a coach — I'm a Bible teacher. My job is to open up Scripture and show business people what God actually said, in context, and what it means for the decisions they're making this week." — Darrell

Grass the Bible is a podcast of Spring Baptist Church that walks through selected books of the Bible verse by verse. So it spends time exploring biblical ideas and topics to help you understand and apply God's Word in your daily life. Pastor Daryl Stein of our Klein Campus leads each week's podcast. Now, Pastor Daryl, we've got something kind of special today, don't we? Yeah, we sure do. And so this is kind of an exciting news thing. And we we don't always do this, but it's it's going to be a great kind of thing. So um I understand that you've got some exciting news. Why don't you tell us about it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I have been looking forward to sharing this with our listeners for quite a while. And it's I've launched a brand new podcast called Prophet and Principle. And the tagline is where Sunday's Truth Meets Monday's bottom line. And the whole idea is to take the same approach we use on Grasp the Bible, which is careful, serious engagement with scripture, but we're going to apply it directly to the challenges people face in the world of business. So we're talking about leadership, integrity, money, conflict, hiring, difficult decisions, all those things through the lens of what the Bible actually says.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, very, very good. So um great idea. And it's gonna be loads of fun. Now, for that, our listeners may be wondering who who's this podcast pointed at, who, who's it's for, and who do you picture um when you're writing and recording these episodes?

SPEAKER_00

Well, the podcast is for people who have been around the block, right? They're an entrepreneurial, an entrepreneur who's built something. It's for a manager who leads a team, it's for an executive making a decision that affects the lives of real people. So it's also for someone who is a committed Christian, or at least someone who takes faith seriously and who has probably asked at some point, does what I believe on Sunday actually change how I run my business on Monday? That's the listener I'm talking to. And I want them to walk away from every episode with something specific and practical they can actually do, not just something to think about.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so that's pretty interesting. Now, this is a little different than what we normally do, even though same principle. Um, do you want to talk about how these shows are clearly different and maybe um the you know, you know, because one of them we're kind of working more towards what we do on Sunday night and some of those other things. And this is kind of a new thing, but you want to talk about how they're different so our listeners can just know? Sure.

SPEAKER_00

So it this podcast that came from a gap, I kept noticing. On one side, there are excellent business podcasts. They deal with things like strategy, leadership, and marketing, but most of them are built on secular frameworks. On the other side, there are some great Bible teaching podcasts, including this one. But there's almost nothing in the middle. Something that takes the actual text of scripture seriously and speaks the language of real business people. That gap is exactly where profit and principle lives. Now, I'm not coming at this uh as a business consultant or coach. I'm a Bible teacher, but my job is to open up scripture and show business people what God actually says in context and what it means for the decisions they are making this week. Well, excellent.

SPEAKER_01

Um, do you want to kind of give us a preview of the first episode? Kind of what'd you cover and why did you start there to kind of give us a sense of what the podcast will be like?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, sure. So the first episode is actually a little different from the standard format, which I'll explain in a moment. But for the launch, I wanted to make a strong case for why biblical principles are not just spiritually true, but practically effective in the real world world of business. So I brought in a guest, Dr. Peter Stout, who is a CEO of the Houston Forensic Science Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Stout is an experienced leader running a significant organization. And I wanted our listeners to hear from someone who has actually lived this out at a high level. So we talked about the Sunday through Monday gap, the disconnect between faith and work, and why it matters that someone is finally addressing it directly from scripture. So it's a great entry point into everything the podcast is going to do over the next 100 episodes that I've already have scripted out.

SPEAKER_01

Well, excellent. A hundred episodes. Uh, that's a lot. Um, why don't you give us kind of a sense of of what's coming? And since you've got it kind of scripted out, what are you going to um uh be talking about and tackling as far as topics go?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I wanted to make sure that we had plenty of content to begin with. So I have two years or a hundred episodes, and these cover the full landscape of business life. So we're gonna dig into things like integrity under pressure, how to handle money wisely, what scripture says about leadership and authority, navigating conflict with employees or partners, building a team, knowing when to walk away from a deal. Now each episode is 10 to 15 minutes, tight and focused. And everyone follows the same structure. Here's the business reality, here's what scripture actually says about it with the full context and background, and here's what you're going to do about it this week. No vague inspiration, just the Bible carefully taught and practically applied. Very, very good.

SPEAKER_01

Now, um I think that you're talking about having a website put in place for this. And so that is, you know, these days it's kind of the front door to just about anything we're doing between that and social media. So what can people expect to find on the website?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the Profit and Print Principal website is launching soon, and it's going to be a genuinely useful resource. You'll be able to listen to the current episode and go back through past episodes all in one place. For every episode, there will be a one-page companion PDF you can download. It's designed either for personal review or to use with a small group or team, something great for the workplace environment. There's also going to be a weekly newsletter and a weekly blog article that go deeper into the content the podcast covers that week. So if an episode sparks something for you and you want to take it further, the website is where you go.

SPEAKER_01

Very, very good. So it's kind of the uh companion guide, more or less. So it's all the extra stuff. Yes. So good, so good. So where can our listeners find profit and principle right now?

SPEAKER_00

Right now, you can find it on Apple Podcasts, on Spotify, and iHeartRadio. Just search for Profit and Principle. We're also on Facebook and Instagram, so you can follow along there for updates for episode releases and additional content. And once the website goes live at profitandprinciple.com, that will be the home base for everything. And I'll make sure all these links that I just mentioned that they're in the show notes for this episode. So our our listeners won't have to hunt for them.

SPEAKER_01

Very, very good. And as always, check out show notes. Um, the authors and uh on any podcast, I'd say any podcast, it's a great idea, but especially on these ones that are about learning and remembering, man, you spend a lot of time making those great show notes. So everybody make sure you check out those. Now, last question. If somebody in our audience is kind of on the fence, you're like, oh no. I mean, I don't, I'm not a prophet. I mean, I don't want any prophets and I don't have any principles. That doesn't sound good, but you know what I'm saying. Like if somebody's going, is this the podcast for me? Um, what would you say to them?

SPEAKER_00

I'd say this. If your faith and your work feel like two separate worlds, if you're not sure the Bible really has anything specific to say about the decisions you face every day, then this podcast was made for you. And if you know someone like that, it could be a business owner, a manager, or someone wrestling with how to lead with integrity, please send it to them. The first episode is up right now. Subscribe so you don't miss what's coming. And if you find it helpful, please leave a rating and review in Apple Podcasts or wherever you're listening. And we've got a lot of ground to cover. And I would love for you to be part of it from the beginning.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's so good. And I think something sometimes we go, I'm not sure this is a thing for me, but you know, let's say you're retired, you're probably giving an advice to your kids and to your grandkids. You're probably talking to guys at the coffee shop or around. You know, um, if it's something that sounds interesting, it's always good for us to be filling up our tank with great ideas from God's Word. Absolutely. And it makes us seem pretty wise when somebody has a problem. They want to come talk to us about it. So good. So that's exciting, Darryl. Now, congratulations on the launch of Profit and Principle. Um, I really think our listeners and everyone's going to love it. What do you um can what do you think we need to be praying for you specifically, if that's okay? Yeah. Um, this part actually didn't even the script. Uh, what can we be praying for specifically um as we think about this? Because, you know, we we we want to ask for God's blessing, but we also want to pray for you as you as you launch this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, thank you. So I think the the number one thing to pray for is that people would find just maybe a renewed, I don't want to say interest, but a renewed passion for God's word to see that it truly speaks to every aspect of life. Because I want to bridge just this disconnect that we face in life, which was we come to church on Sunday, we learn, and that's all great for our spiritual lives. But then for some reason, when we go into the workplace on Monday, we just seem to leave our spiritual lives behind. And so, how do we bring that in so we live out our faith? It's just an integral part of who we are. It becomes our identity through and through. So I'm praying, and and I'd appreciate our listeners to pray that God would use this as a resource for people to see yes, what I do believe, the values that I hold dearly on Sunday, actually make a difference in my workplace. So I would love that to be a prayer for everyone here, and that the Lord would continue to give inspiration for new ideas so that the podcast can continue to equip better people for how to live out their faith Monday through Friday or whatever their work schedule is.

SPEAKER_01

So very, very good. Well, anything else before we kind of conclude our special episode today?

SPEAKER_00

Well, just this. I'm really grateful for the chance to share this here because honestly, the Graphs, the Bible audience is exactly who this is for. Right. So I'm excited for us to get into the Word.

SPEAKER_01

So very good. Well, this is so exciting, and we want to encourage you to uh check out Prophet and Principle as it launches, check out the show notes, and join us next week as we continue our series in Grasp the Bible.
